The ocean is running out of oxygen at high speed, which could cause the disappearance of most of the marine life that these waters support. An extensive review published Thursday in Science documented the causes, consequences and solutions of what is technically called “deoxygenation.” They discovered an increase of four to ten times in areas of the ocean with little or no oxygen, which researchers say is alarming because half of Earth’s oxygen originates in the ocean.
