Two teams have discovered what they call the Holy Grail of their field: the genes responsible for our brain being much larger than that of our closest relatives. The authors of both documents found that genes of the NOTCH2L family are found only in humans. These genes delay the process of differentiation of cortical stem cells that become neurons, slowing brain development but ensuring that we have more neurons at the end.
